Objective: to improve the treatment outcomes in children with solid malignant tumours and metastatic lung lesions.
Materials and methods. A retrospective chart analysis of 203 paediatric patients who underwent lung surgery for metastatic lesions was conducted. Volumes of surgical interventions in children with pulmnary metastases were as follows: atypical lung resections – 234 (77.44 per cent), wedge resections – 46 (14.24 per cent), lobectomies – 10 (3.09 per cent), segmental pulmonary resections were made in 2 (0.62 per cent) children. In 34 (10.52 per cent) cases, surgical interventions were performed by means of high-frequency electric welding for precision removal of metastases.
Results. In 55 (27 per cent) patients, bilateral surgeries were conducted. Re-surgeries were carried out in 33 (16 per cent) patients and in 6 (3 per cent) children – thrice on the same lung. No peri- and postoperative complications were observed. Five-year survival rate for the operated patients made up 37.09 per cent, while for non-operated patients – 8.86 per cent.
Conclusions. Surgical treatment of children with metastatic lung lesions is justified and increases the overall survival of patients.
